Rip Your Strip helps you transform your parking strip into a welcoming oasis that requires less upkeep and consistently saves you money. If your parking strip is riddled with weeds, dead grass, or requires a lot of work to prevent it from getting that way – it’s time to Rip Your Strip. Find out how transforming your parking strip can beautify your yard and make you some extra cash at the same time.

Benefits

Why Should You Rip Your Strip?

Conserve Water

Utah is one of the driest states in the nation and watering lawns significantly depletes our already scarce resources. By replacing the lawn in your parking strip with a more water-efficient design you can help conserve between 5,000 and 8,000 gallons of water each year.

Increase Curb Appeal

Ripping your strip doesn’t mean you’ll be left with an unattractive front yard. Our designs include perennial plants, groundcover plants, pavers, stone, and other elements used to create a unique and beautiful landscape. The finished result is a stunning and easy to maintain parking strip that far exceeds the look of basic grass.

Save Money

The Flip Your Strip program from Utah Water Savers offers a rebate of $1.25 per square foot of lawn replaced in your parking strip, but your savings go beyond a one-time rebate. By opting for a more water-efficient design, you’ll save money on your monthly water bill – a cost savings that you’ll continue to reap the benefits of for years to come.

program eligibility

Receive a Cash Rebate When You Rip Your Strip

Receive a cash rebate of up to $1.25 per SQFT when you replace the lawn in your parking strip with a water-efficient design. Review the guidelines from Utah Water Savers* or read below to determine if you qualify for the rebate.

  1. Park strips must be currently landscaped with living, well-maintained lawn. If lawn has been killed or removed prior to a pre-conversion site visit, you are not eligible for this program.

  2. Applicant must be in good standing with a participating water provider. Unpaid water bills will disqualify applicants from receiving a rebate.

  3. Applicants must be participating voluntarily. Projects required by governmental codes or policy are not eligible for this program.

  4. Projects should remove all lawn from the park strip and replace it with water-efficient landscaping.

  5. Projects that replace lawn with artificial turf are not eligible.

  6. Rebate checks will be made payable to the property owner.
  1. Perennial plants must cover at least 50% of the converted park strip at maturity. Trees will not be considered in density calculations.

  2. Plants may not exceed 24 inches in height at maturity. Taller plants block views, impede safety, and can interfere with city maintenance.

  3. Completed projects must be covered with 3-4 inches of gravel, bark, or compost mulch. Groundcover plants can qualify as mulch if 100% plant density is achieved at maturity.

  4. If landscape fabric is used (not recommended), it must be permeable to water and air.

  5. Concrete areas do not qualify for a square foot rebate, but pavers, bricks, stone, and other permeable materials are permitted.
  1. Completed park strips must be irrigated with low-volume drip systems. Drip systems must include filter and pressure regulators visible for inspection.

  2. Drip emitters must be rated at 5 gallons per hour or less.

  3. Bubblers, micro-spray emitters and soaker hoses are not allowed.

Frequently asked questions

You Ask, We Answer

The cost to transform your parking strip depends on the size of the area that needs to be torn out and replaced. If eligible, you can receive a rebate up to $1.25 per square foot for replacing the lawn in your parking strip with a water-efficient design. You can estimate your costs online now by using our cost and savings calculator.

To qualify for the rebate you must have a living lawn at the time of your pre-conversion visit. If you don’t yet have a lawn or have already removed it, you won’t be eligible for the rebate. Rip Your Strip is happy to assist you with finishing your transformation project, even if you don’t qualify for a rebate.

You do not need to remove your tree from the landscape in order to qualify for a rebate. However, any trees within your parking strip must be watered with a drip irrigation system following the conversion. Rip Your Strip can assist you with this transition during your project.

Only the owner of a property is eligible to apply for a rebate. If you’re interested in ripping your strip on a property you’re renting or leasing, you can talk with your property owner about applying.

No, in order to qualify for the rebate program you must install plants and a drip irrigation system. The finished parking strip can contain elements of bark, gravel, or hardscape in addition to these other elements.

The rebate is available for select areas in Northern Utah. Visit Utah Water Savers website for more information about how to apply for the rebate.
